"I Believe"

I believe for every drop of rain that falls
A flower grows,
I believe that somewhere in the darkest night
A candle glows,
I believe for everyone who goes astray,
Someone will come to show the way,
I believe, I believe.

I believe above the storm a smallest prayer
Will still be heard,
I believe that someone in the great somewhere
Hears every word,
Every time I hear a newborn baby cry,
Or touch a leaf, or see the sky,
Then I know why,
I believe.

Every time I hear a newborn baby cry,

[1:02:47 PM] Jshan says: It was natural for me to compare sentences in Korean and in English. Korean represents my background and the language of my early education and English represents the language I acquired in adulthood and the language of my further education. Comparison of two sentences from different cultures demonstrates varying points of view on the same topic. Historical issues reflect different cultural interpretations.
One of my preferred approaches to expanding my understanding of English is reading newspaper articles covering current affairs. While doing this, I came across the issue of compensation of Korean sex slaves drafted and forced to have sex with Japanese soldiers during World War II. Until now Japan and Korea have had opposite opinions on this diplomatic issue. Besides Japan and Korea, other countries have also had their own interests. I realized that there were significant differences between Korean and British coverage of the 1000th protest rally of Korean ladies. The sentences from these two different cultures, Korea and the U.K., will be compared and contrasted in terms of how they vary in grammatical word order, expression and tone.
The two sentences to be analyzed are –
Sentence 1
‘하지만 일본 정부는1965년 ‘한•일 청구권 협정’으로 위안부 개인의 청구권도 모두 해결됐다며 어떤 조치도 취하지 않고 있다.’
However, the Japanese government does not take any action for the comfort women, continually insisting that their claim was compensated by the Korea-Japan bilateral agreement in 1965 (my translation).
- Kang, Min Suk 2011, The Kook-min Il-bo, 13 December, page.7
Sentence 2
‘Japan has repeatedly apologised and has offered lump-sum compensation, but many Koreans say this is not enough.’
-2011, ‘S.Korea WWII sex slave row continues’, The BBC, 14 December,

Sentence 1 shows the difference in a word order in Korean and English. Despite some similarities, such as beginning with the key conjunction and a subject, Korean and English differ in the word order. Whereas English sentences are organized in the order of a subject, a verb, an object and the compound clauses, a Korean sentence shows a subject, an object, clause and finally a verb.
Regarding variation in expression, Korean writers tend to use the word “comfort women”. By using the euphemism, the Koreans are attempting to express some sensitivity. This also reflects the conservative atmosphere of Korean society. In the U.K., however, a more direct and revealing word “sex slave” is used. The British media are therefore able to express a frankness that language conventions prevent in Korean.
In the Korean sentence, the sentence tone is focused on what Japan has not done yet. It also emphasizes why Japan insists on not offering compensation to the comfort women. Sentence 1, thus, tends to characterize Japan’s fault from the victims’ perspective. By contrast, sentence 2 reflects both sides, revealing what Japan offered and how Koreans respond. The British media, therefore, can inform the readers on a more objective point of view, and maintain neutrality.
Culture is reflected in language. Although the topic of these two sentences was identical, grammar, expression and tone varied significantly, reflecting historical perspectives and diplomatic positions.
